You struggle with self-confidence because you can't be consistent.
Confidence is developed through consistency in two ways:
By consistently doing the work over a long period of time.
By keeping the promises you make to yourself.
Consistently doing the work is simple.
When you start something new, you will suck. Eventually, you will suck less and become good at it.
The turning point is sticking with it until you are good.
Keeping the promises you make to yourself is abstract, so let me explain.
Say you want to get healthy, and you’ve committed to improving your health.
You’re consistent for two weeks, then you start to drop off your nutrition and stop being as active.
Slowly, your health goals come to a halt.
You made yourself a promise and committed to improving but then you quit.
This subconsciously forms a pattern your brain recognizes, that you are a quitter.
When you think of attempting new things, you aren’t sure of yourself because everything you try, you eventually quit.
So, why even start?
That’s why Jordan Peterson often talks about making your bed, cleaning your room, or brushing your teeth.
These are small promises that compound to help propel you forward.
If you want to be a confident person, learn to start keeping the promises you make to yourself and become someone who follows through no matter what.
That is the secret to self-confidence.
